Dr. Peter Linnerooth spent nearly five years wearing an Army uniform, including the bloodiest 12 months in Iraq at the height of the surge. As a mental-health professional, his top mission was to keep troops from killing themselves. After he returned home, he spent another two years trying to save the vets he loved, working for the VA in California and Nevada.

Before you have real influence on people, it helps to have real presence... So don't leave home without it.

Am I for real? I'd like your help.Being authentic is very important to me, because when you're authentic, it makes it easier for people to trust you. When you don't appear authentic, it's tough to come off as heartfelt. Even though I may seem "composed" in the following videos, since I'm shy, there is more than a little anxiety brewing within. And anxiety can make me (and everyone) inauthentic. So my question for you is do I come across as authentic and do you have any tips for further squelching the anxiety within? (That will help reduce the number of times I have to visit the restroom before every appearance I make).

Six year old (precocious) daughter: Is daddy an a-hole?
Mother: Why would you say that?
Daughter: He screams at Joey's soccer game and sometimes gets kicked out.
Mother: He's very competitive, which is why he is successful.
Daughter: When he reads me a bedtime story, he's always checking his BlackBerry.

One of the reasons that Deb Boelkes and I felt compelled to create the Heartfelt Leadership global community is that selfishness and self-centeredness appears to be a malady that is gripping more of the world.
It is also one of the reasons my co-author, Dr. John Ullmen, and I decided to write REAL INFLUENCE: Persuade Without Pushing and Gain Without Giving In (go to that link for some special free resources to coincide with our launch and ways to learn more) which was published today.
